It is with great sorrow that I send this rememberance of someone that I greatly admire. Your family and our community will miss a true hero. His actions always spoke his mind and when his actions were not clear enough he made things emphatically clear with his spoken word.
As a representative of the NAACP, Mr. Roy's death will be recognized and memorialize at our upcoming Annual National Convention. He will always be remembered by our organization.
As for the Newark community, one in which he was a key component, he will be sorely missed. It is often said that "It take a village to raise a child". Well, let it be known that Elwood Roy, Sr. was one of the Kings of the village and he has certainly had a large hand in raising all of the children that grew up in our community in Newark. Any successes obtained by the youth coming out of this village is a credit to Elwood Roy, Sr.'s dedication, commitment, and perseverance. May he truly rest in piece for a job well done.
Gary Hayman
Friend of the Family and President of the Newark NAACP.

To Mrs. Madeline,
Mr Puddie was one fo the community fathers that cared about everyone's kids. Both of you were a true example of what it takes to raise a community. The proverb: "It takes a village to raise a child" did apply to you as community parents. Everytime I see you both, you were interested in what i was doing in the postal service. Mr. Puddie believed in the post office and would often share stories of what it was like when he was there. With the strength of your children and the community of children you helped raise, we will give you the strength and support you need to keep you strong. Please call on me if you need to at anytime. May GOD bless you and keep you always
