We would like to send our condolences to your family at this time of sorrow. Johnny was a Godsend to our family. If it was not for him and another neighbor from Kirkwood Street, my mother and grandmother would have perished in a house fire on 8th Street.
He and Max heard glass break and saw flames coming from the house next door around 2:00am. Johnny banged on the door, woke my mom up, ran upstairs, picked my grandmother up from out of her bed and carried her outside to safety.
Johnny was like a son to my grandmother (Ophelia Wright). She would always talk to him if he had a problem. She loved to fix him a plate on Sundays, but don't put any peas on that plate. He was also a good friend to me and my brother, looking out for us in the neighborhood. After my grandmother passed we still kept in touch.
So you see, Johnny will always have a special place in my family's hearts.
He will truly be missed.
