Obituary of Helen B. Scott

Helen Bullock Scott passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her immediate family on Friday, November 27, 2020. Together with her twin brother, Vincent, she was born on December 20, 1937, to Martha Weathington Bullock and Newsome Bullock in Norfolk, Virginia. Helen was educated in the public schools of Norfolk and began her post-secondary education at Norfolk State College. Years later, after moving to Delaware, working full time and raising her young family as a divorced single mother, Helen, with unwavering focus, determination and hard work, graduated from Delaware State College, earning a B.S. in Business. Helen was employed at Dover Air Force Base in the Base Mortuary during the Vietnam War and the Jim Jones Massacre in Guyana. After witnessing and having one too many horrific experiences, she sought and received a transfer to the Office of Civilian Personnel. In 1980, Helen accepted a position in the Office of Civilian Personnel at the Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) in South Philadelphia and moved to Wilmington, DE. She had a very successful career at DPSC and rose to the position of Branch Chief, Classification and Pay Administration Division. Her responsibilities included traveling to DOD offices in a number of states and to Germany. She retired in March of 1999. Returning to the states after her husband was stationed in Puerto Rico, Helen moved to Smyrna, Delaware. She joined Bethel AME Church there where she was active in many servant ministries. She later joined Bethel AME Church, Wilmington where she was a tireless and faithful Missionary until her health began to fail. She served as Second Vice President of the Florida Grant Missionary Society (FGMS); Chairperson of the FGMS Uniform and Coat Drive; Chairperson of the Red, White and Blue Luncheon; Coordinator of the Angel Tree Christmas Project for 15 years and cooked for the Emmanuel Dining Room and the Sensational Seniors Ministry. She also served as Secretary for the Wilmington Area Women’s Missionary Society and was honored by the organization in 2017 for having served twenty-five plus years in Mission Ministry. Helen served on Bethel’s Finance Committee and volunteered many years at the Summer Vacation Bible School, sharing the art of making crafts with the students. Helen was also a past President of the Wilmington National Association of Business and Professional Women’s Club. Helen had exquisite taste as exemplified by her beautiful home and fashionable dress. She had an affable and magnetic personality and loved to socialize with family and friends. Fun loving, she also had a serious side that many experienced. She loved attending and helping to host dozens of Bullock Family Reunions over the years. She had the opportunity to travel extensively, including to major cities in Western Europe with her sisters Connie and Millie and with family and friends and her late husband Stan on cruises and to Las Vegas, Atlantic City and overnight group bus tours where shopping and casinos were usually the destinations. In her later years, her annual winter trips to sunny Florida, the home of her daughter and grandson, were the highlight of her calendar. Helen was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband of 28 years, Stanley E. Scott, her son Shadeed Majeed {Tracy Gunter), her sisters Constance (Connie) Strachan and Millicent (Millie) Gillespie, her brother Kermit Bullock, her first husband Turner Gunter, Jr. and her lifelong friend, Barbara Price. She leaves to mourn: her son, Turner Gunter III (Ohio) and daughter Theodora Gunter (Teddy) (Florida); sons Stanley H. Scott (Florida) and Steven Scott (Nesha) (North Carolina); twin brother Vincent E. Bullock, Sr., (New York), sister Cornelia Anne Van Hosen (Oklahoma/Virginia); nieces and nephews Glynis Strachan and Dr. Alexander Strachan; Clara, Denise, Regina Wheaton (Elvis), Harry Jr., and Jeffrey Van Hosen; Vincent Bullock, Jr. and Vicky Bullock, Esq.; grandchildren Briana Gunter, Turner Miles Major, Adam Ibn Abdul Majeed, Peter Ramirez and Brittney, Christopher and Zion Scott; a host of grandnieces and nephews, cousins and other extended family; a God daughter, Cheryl Mapp. Also mourning her loss, she will be missed by special friends Georgia Robinson, Thyra Brumskill, Carolyn Parham and Carmella Crawford and fondly remembered by many former co-workers and acquaintances.
