Charity Cartwright Shockley posted a condolence
Sunday, November 8, 2020
My sincere condolences to Pastor Joniqua Combs, Deacon Von Combs, Carmen Gambles, the grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Thank you for honoring and caring for Elder Cooper. In addition to inspiring and impacting her family, she was a godsend for our family and me.
My memories of my Godmother, Pastor Lula Cooper, center on how she made me feel special. It begins with my name. She named me Charity because, as she explained many times, all of Bishop Cartwright’s (my father) sermons during the time period before my birth were about love. She lovingly shared all of the details surrounding my birth with me and others many times. I always thought it was so unique to have a narrative about my naming.
Although she was a deeply spiritual person, other memories point to natural things. In my youth, she remembered my birthday, usually with a card and a few dollars. Birthdays in those days were usually a low key affair, so getting a card was a special treat.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 KJV
Of course, my parents raised me but they trusted Pastor Cooper, or Sister Lula as we called her, to be a positive influence on my life. I experienced first hand the effect of giving and expecting nothing in return, which has helped shape the person that I am today.
Every Christmas and Easter, she gave me a brand new, beautiful girly church dress. Having a new dress meant a lot especially because hand-me-downs were a common occurrence with our large family.
My first shopping trip to a mall was with Pastor Cooper. She invited me and Mother Eloise Savage drove us. Pastor Cooper in the front and Laverne, Carmen, and I in the back. We went to the Blue Hen Mall in Dover; it seemed huge to me.
When I turned 18, she explained the importance of saving money. She established a savings account at Mellon Bank in my name and deposited the first $50.
These are a few of the memories that I hold dear. I pray that you are strengthened by your memories of Pastor Cooper.

To Pastor Joniqua Combs and Von Combs and Family you have my deepest condolences.
Pastor Emeritus Lula Cooper touched my heart when I joined Community Pentecostal Church of God as a watch care member in 2015. She was my biggest encourager. She invited me to do whatever I could to help in the ministry. She was a great Bible teacher and preacher and she stood on her convictions and encouraged the church without hesitation to "Live Right". I enjoyed her, loved her and will miss her. She is where she wants to be with our Heavenly Father. ❤

Pastor Lula Mae Cooper, one of the greatest preachers I've been honored to know. Her ministry was so empowering! I remember listening to her preach and teach a strong message to the women of the church, encouraging the women to be careful of who much they testify about struggling with life. Pastor Cooper instructed the women that every listening ear is not there to help you without a hidden agenda. She also strongly encouraged women, in general, to make sure they have themselves together when coming to church shouting before a congregation of men, everything shouldn't be flopping all over the place. She didn't stop there, she told the men about themselves too. Pastor Cooper was stern but comical in her own way. Of the many fellowships that associated themselves with the Calvary Pentecostal Church, Pastor Lula Mae Cooper and the late Bishop Joseph Cooper always remained friends as well as dedicated supporters. Pastor Cooper will be greatly missed.
