Obituary of Carl J. Washington, Sr.

Carl Jerome Washington Sr., affectionally known by family and friends as “Robbo”, was born on February 20, 1949 in Salem Memorial Hospital in Salem, New Jersey to the late Lawrence Robinson Sr. and Mary E. Youmans Thomas. Carl Sr. unexpectedly and quietly transitioned on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at the Salem Medical Center, Salem, New Jersey. Carl Sr. received his education in Salem County School System. Carl Sr. held various jobs in the Philadelphia, PA, area and lastly worked for Mitsubishi Motors and Albert Organics in Swedesboro, New Jersey. Carl Sr. enjoyed sitting in his yard listening to his music as every car blew to him while passing by. Carl was a very family-oriented man who loved his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he enjoyed having talks with and making jokes. He always had to be the center of attention. Carl’s favorite car was a Cadillac and would cruise by you playing his music. Carl Sr. was a great storyteller and loved to educate his family about the family’s history. Carl Sr. was a people-person and had a big heart, but very stubborn and somewhat spoiled. Carl enjoyed hanging out with his cousins, his favorite song was “I love It When They Call Me Big Poppa”. His grandchildren referred to him as Pop Playa. Carl Sr. enjoyed his sweets, such as cake, pies, and candy, although he was not supposed to have them. Carl Sr. was a die-hard Eagles Fan and a great supporter of all his children and was super proud of his son Carl Jr’s accomplishment when he became one of Penns Groves youngest Borough Councilmen. Carl Sr. enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s football practices and games, making noise, and starting trouble on the sideline. Carl Sr. enjoyed attending St. Matthew Church, now known as the WORD Church, with his son Carl, Jr. and would ask what time Music Ministry Workshop was because he loved the Hot Dogs with the onions and peppers. Carl Sr. was known to be a sharp dresser, from head to toe, and loved taking pictures. Carl Sr. was joined in marriage on June 29, 1998 to the Love of his Life Darlene Bundy for 22 years.
