Obituary of Howard Hawkins Brown, Esq.

Howard was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years, Marva Elizabeth Brown and son Stanley Howard Brown. He is also preceded in death by his Sister Doris Thomas and Brother Reginald Ridgley. He is survived by sons Steven I. and wife (Mihae) of Jacksonville, Florida, and Daniel DuVall of Wilmington, Delaware; 10 grandchildren (Darrius, Howard S., Steven, Apria, Andane’, Ayanna, Jordan, Quadeer, Maya, and Darren); 13 Great Grands; Nieces and Nephews (Jeff, Scott, and Dale Hardy, Russell and Randy Barnes, Donna Barnes-Harris); and Sister-in-Law Anna Tish Barnes. He was also a surrogate father to Langston Sheppard. He was raised by Alice and Leon King, Dora Brown, and “Polly” Brown Davis family and a host of other family and friends. Growing up with his Lincoln University community, both the Village and University, created in him a drive and passion to serve and uplift the African American community and created the foundation for his philosophy and his life’s work. “The University itself provided us the environment to appreciate and identify different types of genius. The University was our world and provided support and influence with regards to character and education.” “We made it work." I was in law school, my sons were in college, and my wife was studying at Cheyney, and I was working at General Motors all at the same time. I graduated in 1968 but should have graduated in 1965 but I dropped out…due to my political ambitions and time off for social revolution of the 60’s … I, along with Bill Young and Charles Ramsey met with Dr. Martin L. King and my commitment to the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement“ created a synergy that propelled my desire to become a lawyer, political activist, and a positive influence on those I met. Howard became a member of Lincoln’s Board of Trustees in 2004 where he served for 8 years. Before that he ran for mayor in 1972 and prior to that he ran the Community Action Agency for the state of Delaware. He wanted to make a difference in the lives of people. He was extremely gratified with his commitment to the Board of Trustees and the community. He couldn’t imagine a better way of giving back than of himself. Rest in Peace Howard Hawkins Brown.
