Obituary of Dorothy E. Broadway

Dorothy Elizabeth (Black) Broadway, 93, of Wilmington, Delaware; transitioned from this life to eternal life on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at home surrounded by family. Dorothy was born July 17, 1926 in Chestertown, Maryland to the late McKinley M. and Nora Black. Dorothy received her formal education at Garnett High School in Chestertown, MD. After leaving high school she worked at Vita Foods, where she met the love of her life, the late Joseph Wesley Broadway. They were married and from this union they had two children; Carl and Janice. After which time, they moved to Wilmington, Delaware to the community of Dunleith Estates where she lived for over 60 years until her departure. Dorothy was a faithful member of Coleman Memorial United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was committed to her church, her faith and worship. Singing was her great joy. She was one of the original members of the Coleman Gospel Chorus with Alfred Francis and Billy Benson. Dorothy also sang in the with Senior Choir. She participated on the Helping Hand and the Flower Committee. She served in many capacities throughout the church, Dorothy was a willing worker. She was also a member of the Wilmington-Chester Mass Choir and traveled with the choir all over the country even attending the Gospel Music Workshops of America in California. Dorothy attended the De La Warr Senior Center for over 20 years. She enjoyed being with friends, playing bingo and cards, crocheting and going on weekly trips. She was a devoted caretaker of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and neighborhood children. Whether it was by car, bus, ship or plane; Dorothy loved to travel with family and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, McKinley M. and Nora Black, stepmother Viola (Foreman) Black, husband Joseph Wesley Broadway, son Carl O. Broadway, brother McKinley M. Black Jr. and stepbrother Page Foreman. She leaves to cherish her memories her only daughter Janice D. Pipes (Larry); seven grandchildren Michelle Broadway, Linda Broadway, Gina Broadway, Tracy Martin (Nathan), Larry Pipes Jr. (Rashida), Carla Broadway, and Andrea Pipes; a daughter-in-law Catherine Broadway and a devoted nephew Brian Black (Stephanie). She also leaves 13 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, her best friend Doris Lambert and a host of other family and friends.
