Eutrula King

Obituary of Eutrula Mae King

Eutrula Mae King, daughter of the late Ethel and Young Johnson was born on January 7, 1928 in New Jersey. She departed this life on Monday May 13, 2019 to wait for her blessed savior, Jesus Christ to come.   She was affectionately known as ‘Trula Mae”.  She was raised in Marion Station, Maryland and educated in the Somerset County School district.

Eutrula Mae Johnson married the late Lorenzo Daniel King and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to begin a new life and raise her family. Trula Mae was a wonderful, independent matriarch. She retired from the Philadelphia School District after many years of service. She raised her family with the love of Christ, all while trying to provide for them so they would not go without.

Her children knew her as a kind, cheerful, loving, pleasant, patient, gentle-spirited devoted mother. Recalling her favorite saying, “the Lord will make a way somehow”, she never complained and would lend a helping hand, even during her sickness. She had a unique laugh, “Huh-Huh- Huh, Huh-Huh.”  Everyone who met her loved her.

Her grandchildren have called her the matriarch—sweet, calm, generous, and special. Their words painted the image of a true warrior, in prayer and love. Her character was so radiant that one of her grandchildren used the word, “mine” to describe her. She said, “although Grandma is grandmother to all of us, she had a way of making every one of us feel like we were, individually, the most important person to her.

Trula Mae’s legacy has reached through generations, touching the lives of even her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. They have described her as graceful, funny, giving, caring, and empathetic. Their love for her is deep and wholehearted, though, it cannot compare to her love for them. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren all recall her token phrase, “Grandma loves you!” Her loved ones will continue to carry her love and spirit with them as they continue on this journey called life.

Along with being a caring, loving, and devoted person, Trula Mae was a proud disciple of Jesus Christ. She joined Zion Baptist under the pastor ship of Rev. Leon H. Sullivan, founder of OIC (Opportunities Industrial Center) and other facilities.  She was a devoted member for over 50 years and was a faithful member until her health declined.  She served God in many capacities with singing on the choir being her most cherished. The love she had for God and her family make up the foundation of the beautiful woman she was. Her devotion to the Kingdom of God and His work provided her with a gentle spirit and heart of wisdom. She will be truly missed and the love her family and friends have for her will last for all eternity. She wanted all the children to know the Lord.

Preceding her in death are three grandchildren (Lewis Driscoll, Monica Billops, and Oraun Bratcher) one great-grandchild (Shavette Billops) and all of her siblings (Frances Miles (Alton), Hellen Johnson [Elwood Sr.], Ella Johnson, Juanita Johnson [Sam], Ethel Dix [Howard], Quentin Johnson, and Mary Bell Russell).

Eutula leaves to cherish her memory her eight children: Garrick Johnson (Sheran), Sabina Driscoll, Bernard King, Roger King, Brenda Bratcher, Gregory King (Velma), Darlene King, Michelle King-Williams (Wendell). Additionally, she leaves to cherish her memory a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and her dog, Star, who will love and miss her dearly.
