Obituary of Virginia Lea Roberts

Virginia Lea was born on May 12, 1922 in Newport (Belvedere), DE to James F. and Lillian B. Lea. She transitioned on April 20, 2019 at Regal Heights Rehabilitation Center in Hockessin, DE.

Virginia (Ginny) received her education at Absalom Jones and Howard High Schools in Wilmington. Having held various employment, during WWII she was an Inspector at Triumph Munitions Company in Elkton, MD. However, she was best known for being the ever smiling and fiery waitress at “11th and Walnut”. Later in life she managed the jewelry department at Gaylord’s department store on Miller road from which she retired.

Virginia was an avid reader, a great story teller and writing beautiful poetry and verse. She loved music and dancing. Her favorite singer was Mahalia Jackson. Her favorite pastimes were reading the Bible and watching horse racing and Philadelphia sports. Not only did she raise 8 children, she was the constant caregiver to all of the generations of her offspring. She was a Mother to many. She was a faithful Christian witness who taught Sunday school for years and a member of Simpsons United Methodist Church.

Virginia was preceded in death my her parents James and Lilian Lea, her husband Heisler Roberts and sons Dennis and Hebert.

As an only child, she is survived by her children. James (Lovina “Bonnie”), Geraldine (Wilbert), Francis (Rhonda), Francine, Millard, Michelle (Michael) and Charles and a tribe of grand children, great grands, great-great and great-great-great grand children and a host of relatives and friends.
