The falling of a legend makes me realize how selfish i am...He made me US feel safe and hopeful in a community stricken by despair and violence...his public service encouraged me to join the military and countless others to be fire fighters ..police member. Post carriers....always was a straight shooter and if you were close enough to him you could only laugh at his jokes ... His name alone kept drug dealers away from the 2nd street corridor ...even drug users refused to ser up shop near the original family home.... Thank you sir ....No one can fill your shoes ...never...Prayers go out to Brandon...Tracy...Timmy and everyone else in the family... Rest In Pride ...Sir

I had met Officer Howell around 40 years ago while working downtown. He struck up a conversation and found out that I also was a Vietnam veteran and he began to extol the virtues of being a policeman. He was really enthusiastic about his job and he almost convinced me to apply to the force, but I was in college at the time so I wanted to finish. Anyway I know he went on to be a good policeman for the city and he will be missed. Condolences to the family as he will be missed.

To the Howell family, I send my sincere condolences. I was a member of the Wilmington Police Dept., and remembered when Gilbert became an officer. I was ahead of him a few years. We never had the opportunity to work together because we were on different platoons after he had graduated from the academy. But we did interacted when we would see each other at the DAP Hall for functions, or other outside functions in the city. He was a good cop, and a great friend. He obviously start making rank after I retired, but I was glad to here he had made Inspector. He'll be deeply missed. R.I.P. brother!
