Dear Daddy:
It has been 4 months since you left this earth. Not a day goes by that I think about you and mommy. You was my daddy and my friend. I miss you and mommy so much. I love you father with all of my heart and soul.

Harry was a gifted musician, a wonderful artist and mentor, skilled and dedicated to his craft. He brought many hours of inspiration to all who embraced his music.
He was fun to photograph and talk to, always humble and gracious. Harry will be missed and never replaced. He will awaken in paradise and I look forward to embracing him there.

I like to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. It was never God’s intent that death should rule over mankind. - Romans 5:12; 1Corinthians 15:26, 55; He will do away with it and He has provided hope-as stated at John 5:28, 29. During this most painful time please find comfort from the scriptures.

During this most difficult time the scriptures serve as a comfort zone. 2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17; 2Corinthians 1:3, 4 Helping us to see that our pain and suffering will be a thing of the past, and we can cry tears of joy as we welcome back the ones that we love so much. John 5:28, 29; Revelation 21:4 I hope you find comfort in these promises. My deepest sympathy goes out to all the family.

Dear Family/friends, 1 final thought concerning Harry's gift to me as a person. As a needy, young man. ,a high school drop out, who also happens to have the hardest head in the world, God was good to me. God sent the hippest guy I ever met in my life, to point me in the right direction.I met Harry working as a temp, Harry and I unloaded trailer loads of vinyl siding, HARD WORK, and of course Harry was of good cheer, in the midst of hard labor.
Harry was kind and honest to me, and again, he was able to get through my thick skull that, IF I DIDN'T WANT TO SPEND THE REST OF MY LIFE UNLOADING TRUCKS I SHOULD GET MY BUTT BACK IN SCHOOL and to GET AN EDUCATION. Fortunately for myself, I used Harry's advice. Given, Harry's intellect and wide ranging intelligence,MADE even unloading trailers of vinyl siding in the summer heat, was a tolerable activity in Harry's pretense. After EVERY encounter with Harry I learned something new.
God bless, jc.

Harry was a great, kind, and very humble man. I cherish my memories working with him at The Grand and getting to hear him play. His playing and character remain among the sweetest I have known. He brought peace.

Dear Family, I was pleased to attend today's wonderful service for Harry, a most gifted man. I knew Harry via a temp agency. I was around 18, left home at 17, had not even finished high school. Harry and I worked together unloading trailers of vinyl siding. I was in awe of Harry an accomp[ished union jazz musician. Harry was a straight ahead kind of guy who NEVER was self aggrandizing about his achievement. Harry was patient and kind, encouraging me to lose some bad habits and inspiring me to go back to school. Harry was a teacher in EVERY sense of the world. I will always be grateful to Harry's compassion. Due to a medical appointment, I cannot attend the event at The Nomad, but I had to say somthing about how truly a good man Harry was. As Indians like to say, "Walk the good road,".
Sincerely,
John Crowley

Harry leaves behind memories for me ...Memories of he and my Dad (Percy Thornton) sitting on the porch talking music for hours on end. Laughing and reminiscing about the Baby Grand, Clifford Brown (Brownie) days. Harry came to the house and played for my Dad before he passed and played at his funeral. Harry I'll never forget you playing at my jazz events. You be sure and find Dad so you, him and Brownie can blow the roof off heaven. Much Love, Sharon

Well my good friend I am deeply saddened by your passing. You were a great friend, teacher and workmate. You were a very patient and kind teacher. Never once did you ever raise your voice or show any agitation towards me when you were teaching me how to lay out that material and cut it. I never once heard you say anything bad of anyone and that is a unique thing these days for someone to keep their thoughts to themselves when they're angry at others. You kept me laughing all day long with some of the stories you told me. I'm not so sure that part of those stories weren't blew up a little bit to make them a little more colorful but whatever they were they were great stories my friend. The last time I seen you about a year ago I never dreamed that would be it. I truly wish I would have came and seen you when you were playing at one of your shows, everyone told me how great you were but I didn't have to hear you play to believe that. I could tell from your character that you were very good at whatever it was that you were doing my friend. Well Farewell, my friend I pray that we meet once again on the other side. May God always have mercy on you and relieve and nurture and heal all those Souls that's going to be hurt by your passing.

Mr. Spencer was a treasured member of our music faculty at The Grand. He was the essence of jazz. And always encouraging of his students to get up and play in public, despite their fears! After working with him for many years, I was so proud to have my son begin saxophone lessons with Harry. All of us will miss seeing him walk through these halls and hearing his music.
