Obituary of Russell Thomas

Russell Thomas was the oldest son of the late Eugene and Mary Thomas was born in Suffolk, Virginia on November 1, 1935. Russell attended the Public Schools in Suffolk, Virginia. His parents build a strong foundation for him and taught him to stand on the promises of God. He accepted Christ as his personal Saviour at a very young age. God anointed his voice to sing and he used it to the Glory of God. He sang in the church choir and various groups in Virginia.

Russell moved from Suffolk, Virginia to Wilmington, Delaware, where he met the love of his life, the late Ruby Ponzo. They were united in Holy Matrimony and from this union one child, Theresa “Terry” Thomas.

Russell was a member of Ezion Fair Baptist Church under the Pastoral  Leadership of Dr. Christopher T. Curry.

Russell traveled all around the United States singing the songs of Zion. He sang with The Gospel Ambassadors and the Southern Gates., but it didn’t stop there. He stepped out on faith and started his own group Russell Thomas and the Gospel Souls. While he was a resident at Hillside Nursing Home, he still sang praises unto the Lord and shared his talent with the other residents. Even when his health started to fall you could hear him humming ‘The Lord Is My Light and my Salvation whom shall I fear”.

On Thursday, March 24, 2018, God called Russell home and now he is singing in the Heavenly Choir. I sing because I’m Happy, I sing because I’m Free!. Praise the Lord I’m Free!

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruby Ponzo Thomas, his parents Eugene and Mary Thomas. His one and only brother and sister John Thomas and Beatrice Thomas..

Russell leaves to cherish his memories his oldest daughter Doris Fulgham, of Suffolk, Virginia his son, Russell Moore,  his daughter Theresa Thomas, stepdaughter Patricia Hampton and Adopted daughter Stephanie Miller. His grandchildren Sherray Thomas, Antoine Thomas, Kiara Thomas, Jay Miller, Sean Miller and Michael Miller. Twelve Great Grandchildren. Devoted friends Mes, Kia Mayo and Avorion Owens. Don’t grieve for me, I’m at peace…Please, don’t grieve for me, I’m about to sit at The Master’s feet. I’m Free, Praise The Lord, Because I’m Free!!! See you when you get there!! ( Love Russel l“Daddy & Pop Pop)
