Roland Brewington

Obituary of Roland Clarence Brewington

Roland Clarence Brewington, affectionately known as “Bozie” to his family and friends, was born on January 28, 1943, in Wilmington, DE, to the late Clarence and Geraldine (Lucas) Brewington. He departed this life and entered the Master’s Joy on July 27, 2016, at the age of 73, surrounded by his loved ones. While growing up on McCauly Street in Wilmington, Roland received his formal education in Delaware public schools, graduating from Howard High School in the class of 1961. While at Howard, he participated in sports - namely football and track - where he was awarded first in state as part of a track and field relay team. After high school, he proudly served in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged in 1970. In the early 1970s, Roland worked at the Budd Company in Newark, DE. After leaving the Budd Company, he began a career at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Delaware as a printer and later retired as a manager in the Human Resources Department after 23 years of service. During this time, in 1988, he earned a degree in Human Resources Management from Wilmington College (Wilmington University). Following retirement, in 1997, he worked at MBNA America Bank as an Officer in security. After leaving MBNA, he worked part-time at Costco and later at the Bear Library. Roland was a member of Mount Joy United Methodist Church from an early age until his health prevented him from attending. While there, he sang on the Men’s Choir and was the Chairperson on Men’s Day. One of his daughters’ fondest memories is of him marching into the sanctuary singing, “Sign Me Up for the Christian Jubilee”. Roland was an experienced photographer, capturing lifetime memories for family and friends. He was also an avid sports fan, especially of track, boxing, and of his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. On any given Sunday during football season, you could catch him on the phone with his cousin “Buddy” enthusiastically sideline coaching as if every game was the Super Bowl. He loved football so much that he even taught the game to his daughters. He also enjoyed watching and attending the Penn Relays and vacationing in Virginia Beach, VA. He often invited family and friends to his home to watch sporting events like boxing matches and the Super Bowl, or for his summer “crab parties”. Listening to Motown and jazz music, taking Saturday trips to yard sales and the farmer's market, and walking in the Christiana Mall were just a few of his favorite past times. While out and about, he always seemed to run into an old friend or make new ones through his friendly, outgoing, one-of-a kind spirit. In 1971, Roland married Norma A. Coston and their union produced two daughters of whom he was extremely proud. Although their union ended, Roland and Norma continued to be dear friends until he departed this life. Roland is survived by his daughters Lisa Brewington and Lori Brewington; a grandson, Brandon J. Harrison; a sister Jerriann Warren; two brothers, Richard Brewington (Trina) and Tyrone Hazell; an aunt, Aletha Cannon; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arnold “Snookie” DeShields.
