Gertrude Hargis

Obituary of Gertrude R. Hargis

Gertrude Rebecca Hargis, affectionately known as “Mommy Gert” was born in Wilmington, DE on March 16, 1929 to her parents the late Harrison Thurston and Matilda Branch. Gertrude was the third of five siblings; three have preceded her in death. Gertrude received her education through the Wilmington Public school system. Proudly she received training to be a private duty nurse. Mommy Gert was the adored housekeeper for her second family for 40 years. She loved them and they loved her. Gertrude married the love of her life Omar H. Hargis Sr.; proudly and happily they raised their family of five children in Philadelphia for over 30 years together. As a family they sat around the kitchen table usually over coffee and made decisions together with laughter and love. Omar Sr. and her daughter Geraldine preceded her in death. Mommy Gert’s love for her family and friends was genuine and sincere. Many a family member came to visit and stayed for a month or more. There was never not enough room in the house or not enough food at the table for family. Friday night dinners at Mommy Gert’s house were legendary and each week they grew in size. Mommy Gert would always say we have enough and we can make it work. Mommy Gert was devoted and fierce in protecting her children and grandchildren. She was quick to tell you “now wait a minute that’s my family you’re talking about” and you had best stop. Mommy Gert leaves to carry on her legacy her children, Deborah Riddick (Bill), Althea Wingfield (Wayne), Cynthia Winfield (Russell), Omar Hargis, (Quincy); 13 grandchildren, Wayne, Barbara, Sharon, William, Empress, Lisa, Dawn, Tina, Ron, Omar, Shaomar, Empress, and Ebony. 27 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; her sister AnnaMae French (DE) as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
