I just learned of Reg's passing in the UofD Messenger and it came as a great shock. Although I would only run into him from time to time, he would act as if we were the best of friends. I'll remember Reg as a funny, caring and truly genuine person. He will be sadly missed.

I just recently learned of Reggie's unfortunate passing. Though I've seen him sparsely over the years he'll definitely be missed. He was friends with everyone and knowing him made high school a pleasanter place.

I just found out today about Reg and am in a state of shock. I know that Reg is now in a better place. I can remember so many good and fun times with Reg. He was the most caring person I ever got to know. It is easy to figure out he got that quality from his wonderful family. The memories that have gone through my mind today are memories of hanging out at University of Delaware and going down to Hampton to get his stuff out of the Apartment down there. Reg made it so fun that you thought you were just on vacation not moving. Reg will be missed by all those who got the chance to know him. I pass by the house everyday on my way to work. If there is anything I can do or you need done please let me know what I can do. You both know where you can reach me if I am needed

I have so many memories of Reg, and I can't remember any bad ones. Reg and I had many great times while attending Brandywine. He always had a smile on his face and he knew just what to say or do to make your day a little better. Reg was a great person and will be deeply missed by everyone. I was very saddened to hear about Reg's passing even though I haven't seen Reg in a while he was in my thoughts quite often. I believe that Reg has touched everyone in some way and made them better for it. The world lost a great man, but also needs many more like him.

Ms. Mercer:
Reginald fought a good fight and our prayers are answered.
For to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Thank God for his devine healing. I know your heart is heavy but God has a way of helping you to obtain the strength you continue to need.
I am continuing to pray for your and your daughter.

Reg and I worked together at the University of Delaware International Programs Office, putting together exchange programs for teachers and all kinds of international visitors. Reg was great at calling up members of the community to arrange to be a "host family" to the visitors, since he had a contagious enthusiasm about his work. Reg was my jazz guru, too, and helped me build a jazz collection. The day I heard of his passing, I went around the office with an Etta James CD in my hand, and I said, I don't know if you knew Reg Mercer, but want to hear one of his favorite songs? And we had a Reg Mercer moment while we listened to Etta James sing "At Last". Thanks, Reg. I miss you.
To Deidre and Renay, you're in my thoughts and prayers. Know that your family has brought others tremendous joy.

Deidre and Renay, I was so sadden to hear about the passing of Reginald. Although I haven't seen the family for years, you know I remember him as a child since I use to babysit he and Renay. Boy do I remember him following after Renay and playing Superman. As a grown man, it seems like he was the cream of the crop. I know he made you proud. Please know that my prayers and thoughts are with you and Renay during this difficult time. I hope I run into you two real soon. Take care.

I am very sorry for your loss. Reg befriended me in the summer of 1995 when I moved in next door to his friend Steve. I saw him practically every day for a couple years and after I moved away from my college friends & got married I thought of him often. He was thoughtful, understanding, & just fun to be around. I'm a better person because of him. I will miss his laughter.

Reggie loved to drive and he loved to sing. If you were fortunate enough you knew these were two things he loved doing at the same time. But what some people might not know is that Reggie was also the greatest passenger in the world. This was one of his favorite stories. I hope you had a chance to hear him tell it and to see him laugh his way through it saying, "It was so cool! It was so cool!" I drove Reggie north through Newark on S. College Avenue one summer night in a black $800 Italian convertible he loved to "cruise" in. Reggie was always cruising. It was a warm, clear night and we had just spent the last few minutes driving down the highway, feeling the wind wash over us and watching the tail lights of the other cars glow red in the darkness like brilliant rubies lit from within. This was just another of our drives that could last until morning, but as we made a left onto Main St. the air around us began to rumble, and then the shrill whistle of a train came racing through the night. We accelerated around another curving left and were quickly headed south on Elkton Rd. The car was racing now, and for an instant there was nothing but Reggie and me and the thunderous sound of the train. The whistle sounded again and as we both looked up we saw that the train was riding along with us, the engineer looking down into our car. He waved to us through his open window and Reggie waved back. Reggie was making friends with the man driving the train. Once, Reggie and I took my Parents' Winnebago for a ride. It wasn't long before Reggie decided we should go pick up some friends and soon the camper was full of people, because that's what Reggie did for his friends: he picked us all up. I can still hear the sincerity in his voice as he said "I'll check you later, Mark." Reggie was my friend and I will miss him.

Dear Deidre Anne and family,
I'll never forget "Reg," whom the Russians called "Bol shoy Myed vyed," meaning BIG BEAR, when he joined us as a Student Ambassador through People to People International in 1990. The Russian young people LOVED him. I also thought of "Reg" while he was a Board Member of the Delaware Chapter of People to People and e-mailed him last year, but he never replied. I'm sorry for your loss. The world will be a sadder place without him.

I met Reg while we were both philosophy majors at University of Delaware. I feel incredibly lucky to have been his friend and am a better person for it. As I reflect on all my memories of Reg, there is not one memory that is not kind, loving and positive. He was a face of all that is good in this world, and I will carry the memory of his unforgettable character with me always. Reg was such a wonderful example and inspiration to me. Thank you Reg, for everything you taught me and every kind smile and hug you shared with me. I will miss you and love you always.

Dear Ms. Mercer, This is a formal student of yours at George Read middle school. The morning that I herd of your son's passing was a day after my birthday. I though "wow" Ms. Mercer's son passed on the day of my birth. I did not know your son, but I knew you were, and still are close to him.As such an amazing teacher,I know you're more than an amazing mother too.
When you told me about the difficaulty that your son was having,I prayed as soon as I could. the day that you had to go to Philadelphia,I prayed that your son would servive. I don't know if you remember, but on january 5th,at the end of the day you told me that GOD had blessed you and your son, over the Holiday break. That put a smile on my face to see you so happy.
The next day for some reason I happened to listen to the anoucements. When I herd the news, I was shocked! Immidietly I prayed that the LORD would lay his dear hands apon you and give you strength. Allways remember that GOD walks with you,and hears every cry you make.

I have only recently been able to get to know Reg within the past couple years. I guess the thing that I liked most about Reg, was that you didn't need to know him for a long time, to really to get to know him. He was always so open and friendly to everyone he met. I will always think of him with that smile he seemed to always have. I truly will miss Reg.

I was shocked and sad to hear that Reggie has passed on. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. I met Reggie while at UD. I still remember the first time we sat and talked. I was drawn to his amazing personality and soulful look at life. A deep friendship quickly grew which has given me many wonderful memories - the talks, the drives, dancing, his music, his voice, his smile and his laughter! Thank you Reggie for your friendship, my song and for showing me the truth ... I was blessed to have known you!
Love for always,

I went to college with Reggie and he was so wonderfully and instantly likeable. In college, his band Svingali and my band Karezza often shared gigs and good times together. After college, Reggie and I were in the band Ichibod Trios together. I played guitar, keyboard and sang a little backup. Reggie ALWAYS made band practice fun, goofy, and yet productive. He's amazingly talented and loveable human being. I will never forget his presence in my life and in my heart. He was one of the brightest lights, with the biggest of hearts, and the most magnetic spirit I have ever met. I wish I could be with your family on this difficult day. My deepest empathies and thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. - Cat
